Reasons to visit

There are plenty of fantastic reasons to stay in our large holiday cottage in North Devon – the stunning coastline and rolling hills offer something for pretty much everyone all year round, and the area is packed with great restaurants and pubs.

You’re spoiled for choice with beaches and local attractions – the famous Tunnels Beaches (also a popular wedding venue) is right next door to us, and the stunning South West Coast path is just minutes up the hill. We’ve picked out some of our favourite activities, destinations and reasons for you to visit below.

From Woolacombe Bay’s famous three miles of golden sand, to the secret rocky coves just waiting exploration around our coast, North Devon boasts some of the UK’s best beaches.

Whether you love sunbathing, surfing, sandcastle-building, rock-pooling or exploring hidden caves, you’ll find your perfect beach within just a few miles of Westaway.

Ilfracombe itself has a number of beaches, including the hand-carved Tunnels Beaches and Victorian bathing pools next door. Woolacombe’s glorious sand and dunes are just up the road, and three of the UK’s best surfing beaches, Saunton, Croyde and Putsborough, are within half an hour’s drive.

If you prefer something more gentle, one of our favourite walks is along the South West Coast path, just a few minutes walk up the hill from Westaway, to pretty Lee Bay. The walk is about three miles and offers stunning views of the rocky coves around the coast line.

The Grampus Inn in Lee Bay serves delicious food – perfect to re-fuel you for the walk back. (Or you can take the easy route and catch the bus!)

While our beaches may be stunning, there’s so much more to North Devon – for every age group.

Some of our most popular attractions include Watermouth Castle,  The Big Sheep, the Wildlife and Dinosaur ParkExmoor ZooIlfracombe Aquarium and the Tunnel Beaches.

If you want to get moving, you can try horse riding, rock climbing, karting, paintballing, quad bikingcoasteering, kayaking, mountain biking, climbing, abseiling, activity packages and many other exciting outdoor activities.

If you’d much rather enjoy more sedate activities, you can visit the beautiful Hartland Abbey and Gardens, take a day trip to Lundy Island, explore the countryside and coastline on relaxing walks, or learn about the area’s fascinating history in one of our many museums.

Food and drink

We may be biased, but we think North Devon boasts a pretty impressive range of dining options – many of them within easy walking distance of Westaway.

Our pretty, bustling harbour is packed with pubs, cafes and ice cream shops. You can sit outside Damien Hirst’s popular restaurant and bar 11 The Quay and watch the world go by with a chilled glass of wine, or head inside for classic, locally-sourced food.

Across the other side of the harbour, at S&P Fish Shop, you can sit outside and enjoy freshly caught shellfish and seafood while watching the fishermen bring in their latest haul.

In fact, throughout the town you’ll find plenty of delicious bistros, restaurants, pubs and cafes.

If you explore beyond Ilfracombe, you’ll find plenty of pubs tucked away in tiny villages that are well worth the effort of finding. And a trip to North Devon wouldn’t be complete without one of our famous cream teas!
